Footwear for the Elderly

Footwear matters greatly for the elderly, as they represent a significant portion of the population, yet are often overlooked in advertising and consideration. Proper footwear is crucial, as 28% of falls among individuals aged 55 and older are caused by improper footwear, highlighting the critical role of footwear in promoting safety and mobility in this demographic.

Problem: Improper Footwear Selection

Advertising plays a significant role in influencing seniors' footwear choices, often highlighting the features of shoes with aggressive tread patterns designed for outdoor activities. While these shoes may seem appealing and promote a sense of adventure, they can be impractical for everyday use, especially on indoor surfaces like carpet. Seniors should be mindful of advertising's influence and prioritize footwear that meets their practical needs for stability and safety in various environments.

Advertising heavily impacts seniors' footwear choices, often emphasizing shoes with rugged treads for outdoor activities. However, these shoes, while appealing and adventurous, may not be ideal for daily wear, particularly on indoor surfaces like carpet. Seniors should consider practicality over advertising hype, opting for footwear that offers stability and safety across different environments.

Chic Agility

"Chic Agility" combines two contrasting concepts. "Chic" typically refers to a sense of elegance, sophistication, or style, often associated with fashion. On the other hand, "agility" suggests nimbleness, speed, and flexibility, usually linked to athleticism or movement.Designing shoes for the elderly requires balancing style and comfort. "Chic Agility" is important because it means creating shoes that look fashionable while also providing the support and stability needed for active lifestyles. These shoes can help elderly individuals feel confident, comfortable, and stylish, enhancing their overall well-being.

Form + Function

Designing a shoe for the elderly was about more than just ensuring it was safe; it also needed to be appealing and comfortable. A shoe can only be considered safe if the person actually wears it, and feeling safe while wearing it is equally important. By focusing on both form and function, the shoe not only provides the necessary support to prevent falls and injuries but also encourages regular use. This approach ensures that the shoe is not only beneficial but also enjoyable to wear, ultimately improving the wearer's overall safety and well-being.
